Social Science Seminar - The Cultural and Socioecological Perspectives on Social Relationships and Decision Making
10:30am - 12:00pm
Online Via Zoom

Human psychological processes and behavioral tendencies are affected not only by our immediate surrounding contexts but also by relatively more distal social and physical contexts. When characterizing the characteristics of these distal contexts, some studies emphasize the role of cultural values and beliefs and others emphasize the role of objective characteristics of the living habitats. This talk will present the evidence that highlights the importance of considering both cultural and socioecological perspectives to better understand people’s social relationships and decision making across cultures. The talk will cover some studies showing the role of mobility in shaping people’s enemyship experiences. It will also cover some studies showing the role of dialectical beliefs in shaping people’s responses to environmental issues.
