In this talk, Crystal will present her research that lies in understanding how different components of social relationships (e.g., interactions, communication, support exchanges) are linked to different facets of health and well-being across adulthood, with particular attention to daily experiences with these social ties. She will be presenting her lead-authored studies that used cutting-edge social science research methodologies such as ecological momentary assessments (EMA), Electronically Activated Recorder (EAR), and ambulatory physiological monitoring devices/assessments. Her studies also consider individual differences in these social and health experiences, such as individuals' marital status/living status and ethnic/racial minority status.
Crystal Ng is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Broadly, she is interested in studying different types of social relationships in late life and how these social ties may contribute to health or well-being. She has been particularly interested in friendships, a relationship of central importance in adults' lives that has been under-researched. Her interdisciplinary research includes ten publications in top-tier journals, including The Gerontologist and The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences. Her first-authored work was recognized three times as Top paper in the national and international conferences. She was also recognized as a TJ McCallum Memorial student award, one of the most prestigious student awards at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), for her strong interdisciplinary track record. In addition, her efforts toward promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion were recognized by receiving the Graduate Student Diversity Award in the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) Convention.
