Jiaxin Shi is a demographer and Assistant Professor in the Division of Social Science at HKUST. His work contributes to understanding how long we can live, and why some individuals live longer than others. In particular, he examines how individual sociodemographic background interacts with place to produce inequalities in lifespan, and how large-scale historical and social shocks reshape these patterns across places and over time. He also studies geographic mobility patterns and macro patterns of social inequality (e.g. in income and wealth).

He received his DPhil from Oxford and conducted his thesis work at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. He is an Otto Hahn Medal awardee of the Max Planck Society and currently heads the Max Planck Partner Group at HKUST. Prior to joining HKUST, he was a postdoctoral researcher at UW-Madison. He is also an affiliate of the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA) and the Center for Demography of Health and Aging at UW-Madison.
